This course is for those students who want to understand global events within an ever-changing dynamic political environment; the course allows students to combine their study of human rights with a systematic understanding of global political processes and power politics; the core modules provide analytical skills for thinking about global politics in general and the role of human rights in particular; students can then choose from a range of modules that cover key facets of human rights, international politics, human rights law and related issues.
Core modules: NGOs, human rights and the united nations system; approaches to social research; governments and civil society in global politics; dissertation; electives: list 1: international human rights law (double module); international organisations in global politics; international communications; globalisation: challenges and transformations; the sociology of human rights; comparative gender rights; rights, multiculturalism and citizenship; introduction to refugee studies; refugee rights and refugee settlement; war, justice and global politics; media and human rights; list 2: media information markets; developments in communications policy; social and political context of communications; political communications; mass media: production and representation; democratisation, information and communication; media audiences; communications, politics and society; social action and participatory methods; culture and identity; transnational communications and transcultural studies; political sociology.
