Interior design is concerned with the creative construction and organisation of 3D space, techniques and conventions and of communicating those ideas and intentions. Interior designers bridge the gap between the architecture and the communities who live and work within these spaces. Students will gain the analytical, quantitative and computing skills very much in demand alongside problem-solving, strategic planning skills, organisation, communication and team working skills. Strong industry links with designers who contribute to projects in the first and second years directly relate to live projects and work placements, and sometimes result in job offers at the end of the programme. In year 1: the subjects studied in the first year form firm foundations for specialist subjects studied during years 2 and 3. They will learn the skills required in technical drawing and visual research, including photography and digital manipulation techniques, plus 3D model-making and construction techniques. Projects in year 1 teach the desired skills in a variety of creative contexts and allow them to gain confidence in the development, fabrication and communication of their design ideas. They will develop their technical drawing skills using CAD and practise image manipulation using Photoshop and 3DStudioMax. Areas of study: technical drawing and materials processes, visual research, design concepts and principles, construction technology, interior design studies. In year 2: this year refines the skills learned in year 1. They will study specific projects including retail, exhibition and restaurant design. Model-making underpins the practical processes, whilst emphasis is placed on the use of CAD drawing and visualisation software. Live projects with industry contacts enrich the curriculum, giving them invaluable experience, such as designing for a retail environment and a trade show stand, and working with graphic design learners on a fast food kiosk. Areas of study: retail design, exhibition design, industry research and professional development, cultural context, interior model making, building conversion and adaptation, literature reviews and dissertation proposals. In year 3: it is the most challenging as they showcase their individual creative skills in a final project. This major piece of work provides them with the freedom to choose their project, whilst readying themselves for successful entry into industry. The final project comprises a feasibility report outlining initial research and planning, a design portfolio and presentation portfolio, culminating in the degree show in which they present their work and participate in an interim exhibition. Areas of study: dissertation, final major project comprising a feasibility report, architectural model making, professional practice.
Students must have 160 UCAS points, GCSE English at C or above (or equivalent) and will also be required to demonstrate their suitability for the programme via portfolio interview.
