Course Description
Exercises and projects are the means through which students gain a wide range of visual & verbal communication skills. Issues explored include: social/community facilities, place of work, house, museum, leisure etc. Lectures & seminars in psychology and the history of art & design, with written assignments, promote an awareness of design issues, and an understanding of political & social forces. Year 1 covers design process and theory conceptualism; methodology; invention; structure; historical precedent; human need; A residential drawing week; life drawing; observational drawing; the use of colour; and computer-aided design. The 2nd year programme of lectures and projects examine increasingly complex & specialist issues. These are supplemented by competition work. Environmental comfort and associated technologies are also given prominence during this period. 3rd year students investigate, issues concerning interior spaces, and their meanings and to extend their personal philosophy. Visiting practitioners offer insight and stimulus. Final year dissertation.

Assessment method
Continuous assessment involves students as well as staff and regular individual tutorials keep students updated on their progress. The final assessment is based on a combination of course work and project presentation. The student-initiated final project and the design history dissertation provide one of the main criteria for the award of the degree with honours.
Entry Requirements
Relevant art and design qualification (Diploma in Foundation Studies, BTEC National Diploma, appropriate GCE A Levels, relevant Access course, or equivalent), plus a portfolio of your existing work. Some universities and colleges also provide 'Entry Profiles' which give applicants to higher education more detailed information on the courses they want to study, qualifications required, selection criteria, etc. There are strict deadlines for application to UCAS courses.
