This course will look at how the past influences the present in interior decoration. It will offer students a review of the influential interior designers and design styles from the most formative periods in history.

Throughout the course we will look at how an interior designer can successfully capture the ideals of the past in order to produce a successful scheme for today with the use of vintage, retro and reproduction. It will give you an understanding of what can work together and how to create harmony, balance or a sense of adventure in an interior. The course offers you a source of inspiration and the practical application of your creative ideas. It will focus on refining an interior design scheme and aiding the development of an interior space with the use of colour, light, texture and furniture. You will look at a selection of the many types of treatments available that can be used for ceilings, walls, floors and windows together with materials, context and regional styling. In addition to projects involving domestic space there will be a project set on the dynamic area of hotel and boutique hotel design where you will design and produce a scheme that encompasses hotel luxury, comfort and style.

By the end of the course you will have gained valuable knowledge of past interior styles and periods which can be used as a stepping stone to further personal investigation or future in-depth study.
