Course Description
In response to the needs of industry, this programme aims to train and enhance the skills of a new generation of postgraduates who have competencies across the boundaries of engineering, science and management. It is targeted at those wanting a career in the chemical, biochemical or pharmaceutical industries. It bridges the gap between the disciplines of process analytical technologies, process control, chemical engineering, mathematics and statistics, and quality technology. These key training areas are taught together with business and project management. The majority of modules are of one-week duration and each module is worth 10 credits. MSc students take 12 taught modules (120 credits), Diploma students take six taught modules (60 credits) and all students undertake an industrial research project (60 credits). Students must take the foundation module, introduction to analytical chemistry, and either introduction to mathematics and statistics or principles of process engineering. Four optional modules (40 credits) are also chosen from a list which typically includes: time series and system identification; model-based predictive control; chemometrics and signal processing; nonlinear process modelling; methods and techniques of mathematical modelling; mathematical modelling in engineering; environmental management and sustainability; process optimisation in practice; management and enterprise. For the MSc, there are six compulsory modules (60 credits) which cover: quality technology; process control systems; design of experiments and multivariate data analysis; management of multifaceted projects (technology and management); process data modelling; online process analysis. The industry-focused research project is a key training element providing the opportunity to apply portfolio of skills to new and/or complex multifaceted situations and to gain experience of solving industrial problems.
