The ITEC Diploma in Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology (A&P) course forms the basis of knowledge for all ITEC courses. It gives us the vital understanding of how our bodies work. It is also necessary for anyone who is thinking of taking any of ITEC’s practical courses, such as massage in the future. Importantly, it is the best recognised complementary therapy qualification in the UK and across a range of countries. Although it is a predominantly theory course, covering all aspects of how our bodies function, from why muscles ache to why we get butterflies in our stomach, your tutors are not only experienced at teaching the subject, they are also very experienced therapists. We use as many interactive learning methods as possible to make the material come to life. We teach everything in the context of what the therapist needs to know to not only be effective, but to enjoy working with people. Course Structure The course is taught at weekends in two day blocks with gaps in between. It gives us time to support individual students with their learning. As well as teaching days, students will be given a manageable number of home study assignments, important for those of you who have families and/or are working. This course is suitable for those with or without a science background and attendance dates are spread out to make learning more manageable. The course is structured around a rolling format of lectures, with students being able to start their training when they choose and no longer having to wait for the start of a new term. Each course day is concluded with a revision to bring everything together and answer your questions. This is an ideal blend of immersion in intensive study with breaks in between to allow you time to assimilate the material and complete home study assignments. Tutors are available at the beginning and end of each teaching day as a form of tutorial and also by email, as we are passionate about the courses we run and take pride in our student support, both whilst on the course and on an ongoing basis. Course times: 10am to 5.30pm Course content The course covers not only all the required body systems required by ITEC as an external examining board, but does so in a way to show how the system works, how it can go wrong and how we help with recovery. It covers disorders of body systems and how we as therapists can work safely and effectively. The structure, function and disorders of systems covered are: * The skeleton - bones and joints * Muscles, fascia and connective tissue * Respiration and health * The heart, circulation and lymphatics * Cells and the skin * Nerves, responses and the brain * Digestion and metabolism * Liver, kidney and urinary function * Endocrine – hormones, homeostasis and their role in reproductive health * Learning will be supported by notes, which will include revision tips, details of other learning resources such as research websites and suggested books to help you. For ITEC’s examination process your tutor will guide you through what you need to know.
ITEC say that at least 5 GCSEs @ grade A* to C or equivalent are recommended, but are not essential. This is at our discretion and we say that life experience counts for a lot.
