The degree programme integrates theoretical psychology, techniques of psychological investigation and the major areas of applied psychology; in the first 2 years students focus on theoretical aspects and develop expertise in a broad range of research methodologies; in the final year students concentrate on the practical application of psychological principles; it is the aim of the course to provide a sound training in techniques of sociological research and analysis; combining cross-country and historical analysis helps students to understand contemporary societies; students gain the skills to carry out personal empirical research based on theoretical paradigms and methodological tools.Human psychology: Year 1: Social psychology; introduction to psychology; developmental psychology; sensation and perception; learning and memory; physiological psychology; individual and group differences; statistics and research methods.Year 2: Statistics and research methods; learning and thinking; abnormal psychology; central nervous system and behaviour; emotion and motivation; social psychology and society.Final year: Project; options including: occupational psychology; psychology in systems; applied social psychology; clinical psychology; applied child psychology; organisational psychology.Sociology: Year 1: Social theory; political theory; elements of social structure; industrial society; sociological research.Year 2: Comparative social structure; professions, organisations and change; comparative political structure; modern organisations, professions and class; qualitative sociological research.Final year: Options include: culture and communications; sociology of education; sociology of science; industrial sociology; social change; sociology of innovation and expertise; sociology of economic life; sociology of health and illness.Optional sandwich year.
