The human geography course focuses on a broad range of social, cultural and political geographies with a global reach; specific aspects of the course include: studies on cosmopolitan urbanism, the politics and practices of mobility; national identity; spatial patterns of urban growth and inequality within urban areas.
Year 1: Communications; data collection and analysis; options: earth surface environments; earth systems; geographic information: a primer; introduction to human geography; researching human geography; spatial data applications. Year 2: Cultural geography; field techniques; history and philosophy of geography; research techniques; socio-economic geography; options: building spatial information system; environmental protection and business management; geographical information science: overview and applications; geographical information technologies; tools for environmental decision making; urban and rural planning; vocational experience. Year 3: Students choose either dissertation module or project; options: business and the environment challenge; culture, space and power; field research and analysis; geographical information systems in organisation; international countryside management; land use planning and the environment; landscape technology; local economic development; post-socialist geographies; remote sensing of the environment; spatial modelling; sustainable development and environmental policy; urban processes.
