Course Description
Human-centred design has been hotly tipped by a leading business magazine to be the next major growth in innovation. Human-centred design is a burgeoning discipline with an associated growth in recognition and capability throughout industry. It is becoming increasingly important in our modern technological world, where maintaining health and safety, efficiency and satisfaction both at home and at work depends on designers and engineers knowing how to design systems and equipment around the capabilities and limitations of the human users. Factors such as an ageing population, a realisation that most accidents and injuries are preventable by design, and tighter legislative controls (eg, the Health and Safety at Work Act 1995; the Disability Discrimination Act 2005) all emphasise the impact of human-centred design at individual, organisational and societal levels. Consequently, training in this field is becoming more of a requirement for employers and employees. It is thus more crucial than ever that we equip our design graduates with the skills and knowledge necessary to optimise this fit. Modules include: Physical Human Factors in Design; Design Management and Marketing; Virtual Modelling in Design; Research Methodology and Innovation; Cognitive Ergonomics in Design; Ergonomics Tools in the Design Process; Inclusive Design; Design of Perception Enhancement Systems; and Dissertation.
