Course Description
This qualification has been nationally recognised by keen gardeners and the industry for many years and has been the starting point for many who have pursued a career in horticulture. It is an excellent introduction to the world of horticulture whether you are a keen gardener who would like a deeper understanding of the methods and science behind plant growth and propagation, or if you are considering a career in horticulture. The course provides you with a broad understanding of the fundamentals of horticulture practice and science. You will learn about plant taxonomy and classification, plant structure and characteristics, plant processes such as pollination, fertilisation and germination, principles of genetics, soils, weeds, pests and disorders, selection of plants in relation to location and much more. Much of the work is classroom based with examples brought in - you will also do some laboratory work. You will need to allow time outside of the taught classes for study.
Assessment method
This course is assessed by two examinations: Horticulture 1 Planning, Principles and Production; Horticulture 2 Ornamental Principles and Maintenance.
