This course enables the student to pursue a programme of study in the history of ideas and their context through a variety of historical periods and perspectives.
Core course: Ideas, history, transmission; 3 options from: ancient political thought and its Medieval legacy; China and the West - encounters 1600-2000; civil society; Darwin, Darwinism and the modern world; empires in Modern East Asia; Freud and psychoanalysis; globalisation - a short historical introduction; Islam and politics; Jews and anti-Semitism in modern Europe: histories and approaches; magic, science and religion in the Renaissance; migration and minorities in 20th-century Asia; popular politics in Early Modern Italy; psychoanalysis, history, biography, problems of methodology; race and the Victorians; religion in society and politics: Britain and Ireland, 1801-2001; technology, modernity and the nation; the changing shape of knowledge, 1550-1750; the decline of magic - magical ideas in English society (1650-1750); the rise of the modern consumer; the Victorian communications revolution; underworld in US history; vice and the Victorians; dissertation.
