This course traces the evolution and representation of dress, from the middle of the eighteenth century until the Second World War. By exploring the fascinating and sometimes surprising correlation between fashion, culture and society, it provides a framework for the interpretation of key works by artists as diverse as Gainsborough, Lawrence and Sargent. The course includes a visit to the Victoria and Albert Museum.
