The course provides students with the opportunity to examine art, design and film practices within historical and social contexts; the course aims to demonstrate the ways in which art, design and film are deeply social, political, economic and technological concerns; students can also choose to study history of art, design and film as a joint honours degree alongside another subject; core classes include surveys of particular periods and places such as Dutch art of the 17th century, the Parisian art world of the late 19th century, specific technologies or media such as film, photography and sculpture, and particular critical and theoretical issues concerning art, design and film such as the problems of Modernism or the politics of craft.
Core and optional modules include: Year 1: introduction to architectural culture and design history; introduction to the history and theory of film; themes in art history; material culture: an introduction; visual culture: an introduction; exploring contexts; practical criticism: writing for art, design and film. Year 2: extended essay; Parisian; approaches to sculpture; European cinemas; Victorian architecture, design and industrial culture 1830�1914; 15th century Italian art and antiquity; fashioning gender and identity. Year 3: problems of modernism; art in the age of mass media; post-war British cinema 1960�1990; the human image in the visual arts; handmade: the politics of craft; meanings and methods in art history; dissertation.
