The history course offers great flexibility and scope alongside a unique university experience; students are able to tailor the degree to be as broad or focused as student�s wish, allowing a choice of subjects which inspire students most from a wide range of modules; alongside the traditional academic modules in history and philosophy of art, the course provides all students with the opportunity for practice based learning about the visual arts, by taking photographs, writing criticism or curating an exhibition, and also to contribute to a growing print collection, where undergraduates collect art on behalf of the department.
Stage 1: Making history; 90 credits from: art-rage, art shock, art now: themes in contemporary art; but is it art? aesthetics and the visual arts; high art and low life: approaching art history; inner worlds: psychoanalytic thinking and the visual arts; ways of looking, ways of seeing: thinking about photography; options including: Bede and the Northumbrian Renaissance; cinema and society 1914-60; medieval monasticism; revolutionary and Napoleonic France; the rise of the United States; war in history 1700-2001. Stage 2/3: History dissertation; core modules: independent study; reading the image; special subject in 1 of: the Dutch golden age; English politics 1629-1642: a highroad to civil war?; the Great war (1914-1918); independent documentary study; life in the Third Reich; popular uprisings and the making of civil war; racial eugenics, ethics and politics 1880-2000; the 7 years war (1756-63); the Soviet Union and its collapse 1956-91; the world of illuminated manuscripts; options in 4 pathways: art history, contemporary arts, philosophy of art, photographic studies; options: Britain and the American Revolution; Buffalo Bill to bison burgers: the American west in the 20th century; the Cold War 1941-1991; commercial empires: Britain and the Netherlands; the cultural history of the Great War; France in the age of absolutism; from Baldwin to Blair: British society and politics 1918-97; the history of medicine; the human uses of human beings: control and communication 1939 to the present; plague, community and conflict in late medieval England; society and culture in early modern Europe; the tools of empire 1760-1920; war, revolution and dictatorships in Europe 1870-1945.
