The German course aims for fluency in the German language, combined with knowledge of the political and cultural development of the German-speaking world which opens up career opportunities in many parts of the continent; the course teaches the language, literature and culture of the German-speaking world of today, and exploring its literary and social history; alongside the traditional academic modules in history and philosophy of art, the course provides all students with the opportunity for practice based learning about the visual arts, by taking photographs, writing criticism or curating an exhibition, and also to contribute to a growing print collection, where undergraduates collect art on behalf of the department.
Stage 1: 4 from: computer systems; information systems; object oriented programming 1 (introduction); object oriented programming 2 (further); web applications; 90 credits from: art-rage, art shock, art now: themes in contemporary art; but is it art? Aesthetics and the visual arts; high art and low life: approaching art history; inner worlds: psychoanalytic thinking and the visual arts; ways of looking, ways of seeing: thinking about photography. Stage 2: Dynamic web; software engineering practice; computing project; independent study; reading the image; options in 4 pathways: art history, contemporary arts, philosophy of art, photographic studies; options.
