About this course

The programme provides a working knowledge of the history and primary sources of textual hermeneutics, and then applies this history of ideas to the ongoing question of interpretation and interpretation theory within other disciplinary and cultural contexts; it provides an important foundation for how one approaches texts and theory, as well as for how one understands the interaction of those texts and theories with (and within) culture; the programme allows many special interests to be explored, with a strong focus on interdisciplinary connections across a range of fields where interpretation remains central to the understanding and appropriation of knowledge; it develops an understanding of the richly complex nature of textuality, in both its narrowest and broadest senses.

Modules

Core modules: research skills; introduction to hermeneutics; primary texts in hermeneutics; options; sacred texts; transnational cinemas; dissertation.
