Students discover how to promote the independence, health and wellbeing of individuals, families and groups of people, who may be disabled, in ill health (mental or physical), at risk, in distress, in need of protection, or in conflict with the law; students also find out more about some of the theory and practice of social work, community health care, youth and advice work, education, law, management and social policy.
Level 1: Action with communities; introduction to health, community and social care; developing workplace competence; confidence counts; English writing skills; applied social sciences; human growth and development; social welfare and social policy; skills modules: learning and personal development; developing emotional intelligence. Level 2: Social problems: contemporary debates; community development; mentoring; approaches to research; communication skills for care; child care and education; methods of intervention; public health and health promotion; developing workplace competence 2; social care and the law; standards and performance management; interagency working and funding; managing practice. Year 3: Socio-political influences in health and social care; partnership and management skills in community settings; advanced communication skills; values and ethics; loss and bereavement; participation and consultation; criminal justice; addictive behaviour; social education; women's health; independent study; evidence based practice 1 and 2; policy in a global world.
