Course Description
Graphic designers work with type and image to communicate ideas. They apply their problem-solving skills and visual expertise in a wide range of everyday contexts, from identity and branding schemes to newspapers to motion graphics for TV and film. This course is for students who want a broad experience on which to base their career. Students can become finely tuned specialists in their chosen field, but most will be effective, all round visual communicators. The emphasis is on creativity and adventurous solutions, combined with high production values and functional problem solving. The first stage introduces essential graphic skills and processes and students learn how to exploit traditional and digital media for both print and screen. There are opportunities to experiment with typography throughout the course. In stages two and three students develop a distinctive body of work that builds on individual strengths through live projects, competitions, specialist briefs and self-initiated major projects. Studio practice is supported by workshops in professional skills and a framework of critical understanding and contextual awareness.
