The Global Citizenship Summer School is a seven week programme of study, five of which are spent in residence in London, England and Utrecht, the Netherlands; the course is an innovative programme that provides an ideal opportunity for students to develop global perspectives and intercultural competencies that are an increasingly necessary prerequisite for success in the global market place. Through this programme students have the opportunity to work with a diverse cohort of students on a number of interdisciplinary projects, develop a broader understanding of contemporary issues of global significance, and explore the meanings of citizenship and civic engagement within the context of globalization. Upon successful completion of the programme, students will receive a total of 12.5 ECTS points and transcripts from City University London and the University of Utrecht.
Students will spend the first half of the programme completing the London module. In this module they will explore a number of contemporary global issues, examine what it means to be a global citizen, and consider how globalisation and the nature of our contemporary world have changed the responsibilities of citizens; following the London portion of the programme, students will travel to Utrecht where they will complete a second module that focuses on global citizenship from a specifically European perspective; specific topics to be studied in London and Utrecht include: the global financial crisis, climate change, activism and the Arab uprisings, citizenship and new media, global ethics and international intervention, sustainability, culture and identity.
