This course takes an interdisciplinary approach drawing on sociology, law, politics, international relations, social policy, economics and anthropology; it introduces students to the local, national and regional impact of migration across the world; a significant part of the course is spent examining theoretical explanations of the causes of different forms of migration eg refugee, forced, and free, and responses to migrants and their settlement patterns.
An introduction to refugee studies; refugee rights and refugee settlement; approaches to social research; sociology dissertation; elective modules: globalisation: challenges and transformations; communities and social action; human wrongs; rights, multiculturalism and citizenship; media and human rights; political sociology; theories of race and ethnicity; crime, justice and security; global migration; international human rights law; media, violence and culture; global insecurity; surveillance studies: theories and concepts; feminism and the media: representation, technology and change; victimology; global politics of human rights; human rights and social theory; international politics modules; global conflict and security; international organisations in global politics; NGOs, human rights and UN system; theories of international politics; development and international politics; political Islam in global politics; political economy of global finance; the politics of forced displacement and resettlement.
