There is a great emphasis on choice, reflected in the broad range of courses, including linguistic studies, film and television studies, social and political studies, and literary studies; allowing students to specialise or opt for more general coverage; the year abroad provides an opportunity to improve linguistic and cultural proficiency in a chosen language and to demonstrate an ability to work independently over a sustained period; the administrative organisation of the year abroad is carried out by the international exchange administrator, and students are assigned a supervisor who look after the learners during the year; students can spend a year abroad as an English language assistant in a school, studying at a partner university or on a work placement; languages and contemporary European studies students can choose to find a work placement or go to a university.
Year 1: Spanish language; German language; introduction to German linguistic studies; the languages of the Spanish-speaking world; elements of linguistics (sound, structure and meaning); applications of linguistics. Year 2: Spanish language; German language; language and society in the German-speaking world; managing research and learning; language and society in the German-speaking world; gender, race and nation in modern Latin America; high, popular and mass culture in modern Spain and Latin America; globalisation (economics, politics, culture and the nation state); auto/biography, testimony and biography; discourse analysis; sound and voice; exploring Spanish linguistics; introduction to German cinema; media perspectives on post-1968 Germany; metropolitan cultures (Vienna and Berlin); ethnography for language learners; psycholinguistics; syntax (studying language structure); teaching English as a 2nd/foreign language; multilingualism; culture and society in Portugal and Brazil; myths and realities of contemporary Spain. Year 3: Independent study project; year abroad. Year 4: Spanish language; German language; final-year modern languages dissertation; discourses of identity (a study of identity formation in border communities in the contemporary and former Germany/ies; 2nd language acquisition theory; advanced syntax; language teaching theory and practice; transatlantic crossings (linguistic variation in the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America); exploring talk (sociolinguistic perspectives on communication); writing in a 2nd language; barrios and borders; language and the city.
