Staff in the department are active in many fields of geological research ranging from micropalaeontology to meteorites, but the current research focus of the department is on the geological expression of surface and shallow sub-surface processes and their application to petroleum geology.
Geology: Level 1: Rock-forming processes; major geological features; earth history and evolution; rock, mineral and fossil identification; interpretation of geological maps and structures. Level 2: Topics considered include: the description and classification of sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic rocks; classification and identification of minerals; sedimentology of major environments; systematic palaeontology. Level 3: Courses cover a wide range of geological topics from integrated themes such as earth structure and history to specialist and applied aspects such as petroleum geology, geochemistry, sedimentology, palaeontology and ores. Level 4: A range of advanced courses; either independent field mapping project or literature-based project. Petroleum geology: Petrology; stratography; ore genesis mineralogy; geophysics; crystallography; geochemistry.
