The course is designed to facilitate progressive learning towards the research frontiers in the disciplines of geography and Chinese studies; key and transferable skills are important aspects of the training provided, together with an opportunity to develop competence in the Mandarin language.
Year 1: In geography, students take skills modules covering study skills, data evaluation using statistical packages and geographical information systems; students also take a core 'human' geography module and 2 regional geography modules, 1 of which deals specifically with China; students can opt to take other geography modules or study the Mandarin language. Years 2 and 3: During the remaining 2 years of their degree, they follow optional pathways, 2 in each year, in 'human' geography, which include economic, medical, urban, cultural and environmental geography; in addition, students take core compulsory modules in techniques in human geography and China in the 20th century; during the 2nd year, students also go to China, either on a field course or to study for the Autumn semester at the University of Nottingham campus at Ningbo near Shanghai; a wide range of optional China-related modules are available in the 3rd year and students can, optionally, continue to study Mandarin throughout their degree; students submit a 10,000 word dissertation on a research topic of their choice.
