The programme covers the language, literature, culture, history, and politics of France and the Francophone world in both a historical and a contemporary perspective; students also study sociological issues, including field studies in social research and visual sociology; students can also study subject areas such as history, politics, cinema, literature, the media, sociology; students spend a year in a French-speaking country.
Year 1: Modern French language I; the French imagination; modern and contemporary France; sociological imagination and investigation. Year 2: Modern French language II; option from: modern French thinkers; French cinema; post-colonial literatures in French; 2 from topics in French and francophone culture I; option from: surveys, secondary analysis and social statistics; field studies in social research; theoretical ideas in sociology. Year 3: Year spent abroad. Year 4: Modern French language III; 2 from topics in French and francophone culture II or 1 French special subject; option from: modern French thinkers; French cinema; post-colonial literatures in French; any Year 2 and 3 options in sociology with the exception of dissertation.
