Students develop near-native proficiency and a high level of communicative skills (written and spoken) through the study of the history, politics, culture and economics of contemporary France and French-speaking countries; lectures, seminars and tutorials are designed to guide students towards an understanding of relevant areas and topics to broaden and deepen knowledge and to stimulate intellectual debate; a strong emphasis of the course is on acquiring and applying proficient linguistic skills in a state of the art laboratory.
Year 1: Core French and German language skills; French and German history; language and communication; electives from: linguistics; history; literature; media; politics; translation. Year 2: Core French and German language skills; contemporary France and Germany; electives from: text analysis; linguistics; history; information technology; politics; sociolinguistics; literature. Year 3: Work placement; exchange university; assistantship. Year 4: Core French and German language skills; contemporary affairs research/diplomarbeit; electives from: interpreting; politics; sociolinguistics; literature; translation; economics; history; media. Students without German A-level have 1 year of intensive tuition and a year in Germany, and then rejoin the post A-level entry for the final 2 years of the degree.
