Course responds to the training needs of the forestry industry in aspects of woodland management and multiple-use forestry; particular emphasis is placed on the environmental and ecological factors which influence the industry in the south of England; a good combination of practical skills and scientific knowledge in forestry and related land-based subjects equips students to contribute to the management of woodland and other natural habitats, and make informed projections about changes likely to affect the region.
Year 1: Tree identification; tree planting and aftercare; botany; soil science; machinery operation for forestry and arboriculture; the forestry industry; mensuration and mapping; ecology; ecological methods; business management. Year 2: Forestry science; woodland ecology; woodland management; silviculture; woodland management plan; tree pests and diseases; health and safety management; sustainable forestry; career development; work placement. Year 2 options: game management; amenity tree production; GIS; current issues in forestry and arboriculture; timber processing and use; urban forestry and arboriculture; NVC; statistics.
