Course Description
Forensic computing is the application of computer investigation and analysis techniques in the interests of determining potential legal evidence. Evidence might be sought in a wide range of computer crime or misuse, including but not limited to theft of trade secrets, theft of or destruction of intellectual property, and fraud. This course will provide the candidates undertaking it with the skills, knowledge and training required in order to apply computing and forensic science to crime investigation. Students will be able to expand their knowledge of how computers operate and communicate, as well as issues related to networking and Web technologies, in order to develop the skills required to be able to use computers as a crime investigative tool. The course comprises both advanced computer science and particular developments in forensic sciences. The course is also backed up by external collaboration with the government forensic laboratory. Outline Syllabus: Computer architecture and operating systems; Networks and protocols; Foundations of cryptography; Crime scene management; Courtroom and expert witness skills; Computer crime investigation; Graphics and image processing; Crime analysis; Research seminar series; Dissertation
Course Fees
Standard 2007/08 taught & research fees for home/EU students (subject to a small increase for 2008/09): £3240. Exceptions arise in Management, Interpreting & Translation, Education, Informatics and Pharmacy. Part-time taught courses begin at £1620, whilst MBA courses range between £2000 & £5800 (initial stage); part-time research courses also begin at £1620, whilst Management programmes range from £2080 to £9360 (initial DBA fees). Entry Requirements
At least a second-class honours degree or equivalent in Computer Science or related subject. Applicants with lesser qualifications, but with a minimum of five years' substantial work experience in computing may also be considered. Overseas students will generally be expected to have he equivalent of a UK second-class honours degree. English language requirements: IELTS/TOEFL scores of 6/550 (computer/internet-based 220/83), as a minimum requirement.
