Course Description
Leila Galloway and Annie Cattrell have been driving new collaborative work on contemporary sculpture by exploring its possible development through the use of 3D digital modelling. Their findings resulted in the 2004 symposium, Tool versus Medium: The use of rapid prototyping in contemporary sculpture. Their work also led to Cattrell's 2007 fellowship exploring the possible rapid prototyping applications of magnetic resonance imaging. This project involved partnerships with scientists and gained funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, Arts Council England and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council. The group has also focused a number of projects around the nature of pleasure. Several members have curated exhibitions such as Doubtful Pleasures, while Adam Gillam has written on the subject in Miser and Now. Work was also undertaken to investigate fine art production using critical approaches including psychoanalysis and gender / lesbian and gay studies. A forthcoming symposium on pleasure will extend work on this theme. A final theme has been the nature of perceptual experience, and John Lancaster has participated in exhibitions and publications exploring this topic both in the UK and in Australia. The group's researchers have maintained an international presence through solo and group exhibitions in Kyoto, Milan, Melbourne, Sydney, Boston, New York, Chicago and Florida. In the UK, they have contributed to exhibitions at prestigious London venues, where funding has been received from a variety of external sources including the Arts Council, the British Council and the London Arts Board. Members of the group have also undertaken international residencies in Australia, Japan and America, curated a variety of exhibitions and helped lead major projects such as the Big Draw.
