Course Description
The MA by Project is for people who have developed aesthetic and practical skills or, an interest in a particular area that they wish to further develop. The course is suitable for practicing artists, craftspeople, and designers, wishing to re-energise and re-vamp their practice; people who wish to further develop the practice and understandings they developed on their undergraduate degree; as well as people wanting to undertake a specific research project. Research projects can range from subjects of specialised aesthetic, technical, or academic interest to the development of products and processes for particular markets. Students follow a core programme of research seminars, and an agreed course of independent study monitored by a negotiated learning agreement. During the first semester both full-time and part-time students develop their initial ideas into a fully worked out project proposal. The proposal is subject to academic approval before progress on the course can continue. This is followed by a series of theory workshops designed to further develop the project in relation to consideration of the nature of practice, imagination, and visual culture. The course is able to offer access to a wide range of specialist workshop provision including: well equipped jewellery, silversmithing, metal and wood workshops; ceramics, printmaking, and painting studios; musical instrument making and furniture making workshops; darkrooms, CAD CAM, and digital moving image editing. Within the department are a spectrograph for materials analysis, and facilities for digital prototyping.
Course Fees
2007/08: £4,230; part-time £2,115.
