By studying Film studies (European) with a modern language, students explore these questions and reach a high level of competence in French, German or Spanish, or a combination of 2 languages also including Catalan, Italian and Portuguese; all languages except French can be studied from scratch provided you have an A level in one modern language; French can be studied from A level only; in the 1st year, students take modules in the language(s) of their choice together with a 2-module unit on film language and modules on European cinema and European national cinemas; cultural modules are also taken in the language areas studied; in the 2nd and final year students combine their study of language modules with a selection of film-related modules from across the School which includes, the cinematic city, European cinema: aspects of realism, French cinema, Italian cinema, German cinema, Brazilian cinema and Latin American cinema; in the final year there is the opportunity to undertake independent research in a 2-unit dissertation module; students spend the 3rd year in a country related to the languages that they are studying either as an assistant in a school or at university or on a work placement; during this year, students complete an extended essay or take examinations at their chosen university; students following the 2-language route may spend time in 1 or both of the countries whose languages they are studying.
