This course develops understanding of current film scholarship and provides a creative and practical grounding for careers in the TV, film and media industries; the focus of the degree is on the cultural, aesthetic, political and economic importance of film and this is recognised and elaborated in 3 distinct areas: studies in world cinema; the relationship between film and new media; and practical experience of digital film and video production; students study film texts, film histories and national cinemas from a variety of theoretical and interdisciplinary perspectives, and develop the critical tools necessary for the analysis and understanding of contemporary film theory and practice and its connections within wider digital culture; lectures and seminars are accompanied by weekly film screenings and students are given the opportunity to develop transferable skills and aptitudes including group presentations and writing short screenplays and film production dossiers; students will also be given the opportunity to apply their knowledge creatively in practical video-making modules in both fiction and documentary film contexts.
