This course offers a unique opportunity to study all aspects of short film production, including: scripting, filming, editing, special effects processing, computer-generated imagery, audio processing, compositing and post-production processes; practical work using university equipment and facilities gives students the skills and knowledge to start a career in this exciting and vibrant sector of the new media industry; the main focus of the course is on developing practical knowledge of video-making and students gain experience in all aspects of music video and short film production; students learn about the creative processes used in the medium such as images, visual narrative, framing, storytelling and the style and techniques of film makers; students build an understanding of the history of the art form; if students decide to proceed to the third year to top-up to a degree learners will study the business side of the advertising, music video and short film industries including marketing, pitching, selling and promoting the product, as well as developing advanced production and directing techniques.
Level 1: Pre-production; camera and lighting; studio production techniques; editing and post-production; the history of the music video; the science of audio and video; visual aesthetics and concept design; silent narrative in context. Level 2: Music video concepts and structures; cinematography; editing and post-production; soundtrack and trailer analysis; sound design; studio production; professional issues in the creative industries; work-based learning.
