The Foundation Degree in Sport Fisheries and Aquaculture is designed to meet the needs of the fishery management and aquaculture industry for practically skilled employees with a good technical and scientific background. Successful students can progress to Year 3 of the BSc programme. // The vocational and practical skills are delivered through visits to fish farms, fisheries and research centres as well as the involvement of students with fish farmers, fishery managers and the support of industries. Subjects studied include: water quality; fish anatomy and physiology; fishery management and ecology; aquaculture; fish health and nutrition. // During the course, the students spend at least 12 weeks on industrial placements working on fish farms, fisheries, processing units and research establishments both at home and overseas. Recent placements include Scottish salmon farms, specimen carp fisheries in England, France and Spain, a tilapia farm in Jamaica, river keeping on local chalk streams, the London Aquarium, the Fish Disease Laboratory at Weymouth and a bait manufacturer.
