This course is designed to enable a career connected with the professional care and management of a wide range of animals in middle managerial positions in various animal industries. Students may progress to the final year of the Honours degree programme. The programme was developed in consultation with employers, and students will participate in practical, industry related tasks. // With a firm science foundation, the course includes: biological science, biochemistry, vertebrate anatomy and physiology, key skills in communication, ITC and problem solving are also included to prepare students for middle managerial positions in the various animal industries. // Three science units may be replaced with animal behaviour and training units: advanced study of animal behaviour and training, plus an introduction to pet behaviour counselling. // Practical animal handling skills and husbandry techniques are interwoven through the entire course and students are encouraged to broaden their expertise through work based learning in specialist areas. Academic research skills will be sharpened through a second year module on applied industrial research. // Work placements over five weeks of the year provide career guidance and employability. Recent placements include the Veterinary Labs Agency, the Animal Quarantine Centre, Haydn Farm (organic livestock) and Marwell Zoo. // Mature students, or students with non-traditional qualifications are encouraged to apply and will be considered on an individual basis. // Assessment is through coursework instead of end-of-year examinations.
