Course Description
Explores the notions of race and representation by evaluating their key roles in the construction of identity in 'popular' culture. These roles are examined via an interdisciplinary approach, which focuses on music, fashion, advertising and various types of mass media as sites for the production of particular forms of gendered and racialised difference. The course takes a critical approach to the cultural politics of images of culture and identity, with regard to the manner in which they influence our contemporary social identities, which means we explore musical and other forms of expressive 'popular' culture as sites of resistance in alternative 'public' arenas.
