The course teaches all aspects of fashion design, from creation (including traditional and contemporary methods of pattern cutting) through to successful retailing; there is a strong emphasis on communicating and building brands, exploring the creative use of merchandising, graphics, photography, advertising, interiors and shopping experiences.
Year 1: Live projects and work-related experiences form an important part of the course; students also learn more about the industry and design process, build essential craft and information technology skills, and gain important and historical contemporary perspectives. Year 2: The creative design and technical aspects are fused; students expand business, professional and production knowledge and skills; students work on live projects with industry practitioners, and are encouraged to develop external links and networks. Final year: Independent study and focused on a design collection; students write an essay on an aspect of fashion design and clothing design or business; in the final semester, students produce a professional portfolio that directly relates to the direction they would like to move in following the completion of the course.
