First year students take core courses in organismal biology, ecology and environmental science, introduction to soils and fundamentals and applications of chemistry; Honours students undertake a supervised research project and a range of intensive courses relevant to a specialisation; thus, students doing the physical sciences option have a stronger emphasis on chemistry then those studying the main environmental science programme.
Level 1: Animal and plant biology; chemistry; optional courses in biology; geography; geology; land management; meteorology and environmental physics; computing; statistics. Level 2: Community ecology; pollution and the environment; intermediate chemistry; 4 further courses with at least 2 from: crop protection; forest ecology and forest management; ocean biology; palaeontology and sedimentology; mapping and structural geology; environmental geology; introductory soil science; soils in environmental science; space science. Level 3: Courses chosen from 3 groups: physio-chemical, biological/ecological and land use and related subjects. Students choose at least 1/2 their courses in physio-chemical subjects, and 1/8 from each of the other 2 groups. Level 4: Honours students undertake a supervised research project; advanced course on environmental chemistry; range of intensive courses relevant to physical science specialisation.
