Research is divided into 3 major sections: environmental management; environmental monitoring, analysis and control; and applied ecology.
Environmental management includes: links between environmental and financial performance; local sustainability issues; environmental implications of the service economy and of information communication technology; environmental education, especially with respect to biodiversity; predictive modelling of economic time series, and urban planning; environmental monitoring, analysis and control includes: reduction of metal fume exposure in arc welding, control of aerosol, delivery of drugs, occupational epidemiology, anaerobic and reedbed treatment of wastewaters, modelling of pollution pathways, biodeterioration of ancient monuments, measurement and modelling of exposure to air pollution, environmental geochemistry, peat erosion processes, and periglacial and coastal geomorphology; applied ecology includes: heathland, upland, wetland and arctic-alpine ecology; plant autecology; lichen ecology and biogeography; roadside vegetation; impacts of air pollution on vegetation; urban and industrial ecology, including land reclamation and biomonitoring of pollution.
