Businesses operating in environment-related areas are finding it increasingly difficult to compete; as markets become more competitive and complex, the demand for environmentally aware professionals with business skills grows; this course develops the student's business skills and knowledge in core areas including: policy, law, economics, finance, business analysis, management; students learn environmental techniques such as environmental management systems and environmental auditing; environmental impact assessment; project management; the consultancy project module requires the student to complete a project, often in partnership with a real organisation; previous examples includeassessing the economic benefits for tourism of re-wilding part of a national park; site management plans; evaluating the environmental management systems of small businesses; field visits are also an important part of the course; previous visits include regeneration schemes in Toronto, Canada, and post-industrial landscapes in Cornwall; students also make frequent visits to local sites in Sheffield and the Peak District.
Core modules: environmental perspectives and policy development; valuing the environment; environmental management systems; professional management skills; environmental impact assessment; environmental liability for redevelopment of contaminated land; consultancy project; to complete the Masters students also take applied research methods and a dissertation; optional 1 from; landscape planning and restoration (includes a field trip); sustainable rural development; geographical information systems; geographical information systems and the environment.
