Course Description
This programme is designed to provide the requisite skills for a range of careers, including, teaching, marketing or translation. Literature and Language, comprising two thirds of the course, is combined with another language: French, German or Spanish. Skills in four main areas will be developed, in: writing, reading, speaking and listening; in a range of practical and useful contexts. The contemporary socio economic & cultural context will provide the backdrop to the modern language of study. Literary Studies in year 1 cover the genres of poetry, prose and drama and introduce critical vocabulary and the study of literature in historical context. Theories of human communication and basic descriptive methods in English Language will also be examined. In year 2, core modules in language and literature including introductions to critical literary theory and variety in English Language, will be studied. In addition, there are choices from a number of periods of literary study (such as Victorian Literature or British Romanticism, for example) and/or language modules covering topics such as Child Language Acquisition or Conversation Analysis. For the Modern Language strand, consolidation upon the performance at Foundation Level will be effected by communicating, orally, and in writing, with precision and clarity and in a manner appropriate to a given task and a given audience. For their final year, students will choose to study two aspects of literary or linguistic theory such as Marxist theory, feminism, cultural theory, etc. There are also a range of modules from which to choose.

Assessment method
Via formal examinations, essasys, projects, log books, commentaries, oral presentations and writing portfolios. All work is moderated and, advanced work is subject to second marking and external examination.
