The course qualifies students to work in the post-compulsory sector (e.g. further education, adult and community education, prisons or work-based learning); it is designed for practising teachers of ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages) who do not yet hold a recognised teaching qualification; the qualification gives the chance to gain the skills required for teaching learners above the ages of 14 (more commonly 16) based on a sound understanding of theories of learning as applied to students� own subject specialism.
Year 1: Students study with a subject-specific group of developing teachers; they deepen their understanding of English language as a subject area; this includes knowledge of key questions, theories and concepts in subject, as well as the development of personal skills in the subject area; students extend repertoire of learning and teaching methods and strategies in subject, and develop understanding of the diverse needs of learners; they consider how the theories of learning and assessment can be applied to the teaching of subject; they are encouraged to analyse and critique policies and practices relating to the teaching of subject, and to develop your own considered approach to teaching language. Year 2: students study alongside those planning to teach other subjects at post-16 (from leisure and tourism to music technology and beyond); they look at broader issues in post-compulsory education, learning and teaching from your perspective as a subject specialist, and work on projects with course participants from own and other subject areas.
