Course Description
The course is aimed at raising your level of academic English before you start your undergraduate or postgraduate course, giving you the ability and confidence to study more efficiently within your chosen discipline and helping your integration into British culture. The course consists of a combination of classes, independent study, a computer induction session and cultural visits. The teaching will be geared to the needs and abilities of those attending. Typical activities will include the following: Reading: Study of a wide variety of texts from academic and other sources. Speaking and Listening Listening exercise and note-taking; Discussions and seminar participation; Oral presentation skills; Conversation/Social English; Formal Debate. Written Skills Grammar and formal writing; Essay writing skills and helpful hints; Use of academic English; Writing introductions/conclusions; Interpretation of data and statistics. We will use appropriate course books plus a wide variety of supporting material.
