For those who wish to explore thinking across the two disciplines and enhance critical awareness in English literature, language and philosophy, this programme aims to equip students to read both literary and philosophical texts with an eye to their argumentative content and to their aesthetics, as well as to gain an understanding of the nature and principles of language.
Year 1: English language and literature: 4 units from a list of options with a strong emphasis on developing reading and critical skills and an understanding of language; Philosophy: ethical, political, ancient and modern philosophy. Years 2-3: Equal number of units from both disciplines chosen from over 40 English and 20 philosophy modules; altogether, these cover a chronological range from ancient times to the present and include all of the major areas of study within the disciplines, such as ethics, aesthetics, empiricism, philosophy of language, drama, poetry, prose and language description, together with a number of individual philosophers and literary authors; a joint module - literature and philosophy - is compulsory in the third year.
