The 1st year examines the major literary genres: the novel, poetry, drama, as well as creative writing and literature on screen; the 2nd year introduces literature from the medieval period to the present, with courses on the history of English literature, romantic and Victorian literature, 20th and 21st century literature, ways of reading, and adaptation; this is a 19th and 20th century history course taught by leading scholars in the field; the curriculum is exciting and wide-ranging, and develops students� historical skills, enhances an understanding of the past and develops students abilities to think and write critically and creatively; the course focuses on working with primary sources and discussions and debates about historical controversies.
English Year 1: Modules include: poetry and society; introduction to the novel; introduction to drama; writing and screening. Year 2: Medieval and renaissance literature; 18th- and 19th-century literature; 20th- and 21st-century literature; ways of reading. Year 3: English dissertation; modernism; 20th-century women�s writing; Geoffrey Chaucer; contemporary poetry; writing the self; English in the workplace; 19th-century fiction and history; colonialism/postcolonialism; 20th-century American literature; studies in literature and film; text and technology. History Year 1: Modules include: Presenting and representing the past; Great Britain, Europe and the wider world; 20th-century Europe; 20th-century America. Year 2: Sport, leisure and culture in 20th-century Britain; the development of modern Britain since 1939; Englishmen and foreigners: immigration, ethnicity and racism during the 19th- and 20th-centuries; United States ethnic history; Russia in revolution, 1861-1917; the Second World War; communism at home and abroad, 1917-89; Britain and the world in the 20th-century; the Cold War; British India, 1857-1947. Year 3: History dissertation; terror and progress: the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) 1917 to 1953; media, myth and modern British history; refugees in 20th-century Britain; rural Britain since 1939; nationalism, racism and genocide in 20th-century Europe; moments of decision: Great Britain and European integration; United States intervention and the collective memory of Vietnam.
