The 1st year examines the major literary genres: the novel, poetry, drama, as well as creative writing and literature on screen; the 2nd year introduces literature from the medieval period to the present, with courses on the history of English literature, romantic and Victorian literature, 20th and 21st century literature, ways of reading, and adaptation; all joint Honours students have the opportunity to study the history of cinema, and to analyse both classic and contemporary films from a variety of countries; students start the course as a film buff and end it as an expert in the history, criticism, business and theory of cinema.
English Year 1: Modules include: poetry and society; introduction to the novel; introduction to drama; writing and screening. Year 2: Medieval and renaissance literature; 18th- and 19th-century literature; 20th- and 21st-century literature; ways of reading. Year 3: English dissertation; modernism; 20th-century women�s writing; Geoffrey Chaucer; contemporary poetry; writing the self; English in the workplace; 19th-century fiction and history; colonialism/postcolonialism; 20th-century American literature; studies in literature and film; text and technology. Film studies Year 1: Modules include: Introduction to film; introduction to media, culture and society. Year 2: International cinema and film theory; film in America and Britain, 1946-1979. Year 3: Film studies dissertation; contemporary British and American cinema; exploitation cinema; silent cinema; French cinema.
