The English course engages students' enthusiasm for reading and literature, and introduces them to advanced critical thinking in the form of theoretical practice; the degree investigates the foundations of contemporary literature via an examination of the cultural narratives we tell ourselves; modules involving myth, detective fiction and gothic and science fiction investigate our manner of representing the world around us; Creative Writing is taught by staff who are not only academics but also successful and current practitioners.
Year 1: Introduction to creative writing; getting started in journalism; writing poetry; reading literature; critical approaches; academic skills and personal development profiling. Year 2: Urban and contemporary writing; journalism; scriptwriting and performance; student placement; literary transformations; detective fiction; teaching children�s literature; arts and entertainment writing; nineteenth century literature and society; developing a business; Erasmus exchange. Year 3: Gothic and science fiction; the autobiographical I; Shakespeare: texts and contexts; getting published; modernism to postmoderism; writing for children; dissertation.
