Course Description
The programme centres on the core modules of critical theory and literature; seeking to develop analytical abilities and historical knowledge, in addition to honing interpretive and critical skills. There will be both general and vocational enhancement of language skills; from a choice of French, German or Spanish. Both traditional literary genres and popular culture will be examined, together with an introduction to different critical approaches, as well as the linguistic and historical study of literary texts (linguistics). Critical and cultural theory will be developed further, within the context of literary historical periods. For the language strand, the ability to communicate orally and in written form, with clarity and precision, will be developed, to a degree, which will facilitate delivery of an appropriate task, to a given audience. A dissertation in the final year will be based on the literature modules, which will develop theoretical approaches to literature. Students will have assimilated a broad range of texts and possess a good grasp of the contemporary socio-economic & cultural contexts, of the countries relevant to the choice of language.
