The introductory modules for this English language degree look at issues such as how our language changes according to the context in which it is being used, how men's and women's language use differs, how we acquire language and how and why it breaks down; film studies covers subjects such as Hollywood cinema, blockbusters, British and European film, Japanese and other world cinemas, gender, the body and film, film and history, new technologies and film, DVD, script- and screen-writing, Australian cinema, film-making and distribution, media and film in Wales, acting and performing, language and film, blogging and podcasting, computer games and film, film stars and film on television.
Year 1: Students take the equivalent of 8 modules in English language and 4 in film studies, including: Tools for language analysis 1; word-structure; tools for language analysis 2; meaning, semantics and pragmatics; issues in English language studies; English in society. Years 2 and 3: Students take the equivalent of 16 modules in English language and 8 in film studies, including: Meaning, semantics and pragmatics; English sentence structure; variation in English; sound and sound structure.
