This course develops students� specialised knowledge, skills and understanding in the field of English language teaching and applied linguistics, enabling them to enhance their practical professional development and expertise, and engage in relevant research; it has 5 strands and can be taken with specialisms in the following areas: information communication technology and multimedia; English for specific purposes; English to young learners; and testing and assessment; the programme is aimed at teachers with at least 2 year�s professional experience
Term 1: applied linguistics and English language teaching (ELT) methodology; research methodology; plus 3 from: psychology of language classroom practices; psychology of second language acquisition and learning; English as an international language; the grammar of English; text and discourse analysis; spoken English; term 2: professional practice in English language teaching; research methodology; plus 2 from: language curriculum evaluation; literature in English language teaching; teacher training; phonology and the teaching of pronunciation; management of educational institutions; computer assisted language learning; language testing; approaches to teaching grammar; approaches to teaching writing in English as a second language; reading in a second language; cultural issues in ELT; term 3: 5-week unit on research methodology; individual research and 15,000-word dissertation.
