This course is designed to support the professional growth and career development of English language teaching professionals; the course caters for both experienced and inexperienced teachers, who study on different pathways leading to the same degree; the focus is very practical and encourages critical reflection on students� own experience of teaching and learning; the lecturers are experts in their field of English language teaching, with many having taught English abroad; teaching methods encourage active participation in group work, discussion and exchange of experiences and ideas; students are also given the opportunity to undertake practical work, including designing class materials and planning lessons and tests; the University values the differing perspectives of teachers from different countries and their varied experiences of teaching and learning; the broadening of cultural horizons is one of the advantages of joining such an internationally diverse programme; students on this course come from a number of countries including: Taiwan, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Korea, China, Mexico and the UK; the University offers a high level of in-sessional support designed specifically around the needs of students, both in classes and on an individual basis.
Stage 1: certificate students on the ELT pathway take the following core modules: language in use; theory and practice in language teaching; course design and assessment; students on the PLT pathway take the following 20-credit core modules: language in use; principles of language learning and teaching; materials and assessment in language teaching; stage 2: diploma students on both pathways take 3 20-credit option modules selected from the following*: blended learning and CALL: multimedia applications in language learning; English for specific purposes (ELT pathway only); intercultural communication; learner autonomy; management in ELT (ELT pathway only); materials development; teacher education (ELT pathway only); teaching English language through literature; teaching English to young learners; teaching reading and writing; teaching speaking, listening and pronunciation; stage 3: Masters: dissertation of 15,000 words.
